Hinu Mirimiri (Mirimiri Oil)
A soothing Mānuka face oil, made for the face and the art of mirimiri (traditional Māori massage). We blend wild East Coast Mānuka oil with organic fractionated coconut oil and natural vitamin E: light and silky, it sinks in without leaving skin greasy.
It's the same oil Tohunganui Elaine uses on the face in her Whenua Healing mirimiri sessions, now bottled so you can bring the ritual home.
What the science says
East Coast Mānuka oil: nature's skin defender
- Rich in triketones. New Zealand research identified the triketones in East Coast Mānuka oil as the compounds behind its antimicrobial activity. They're what make this oil special, and our East Coast whenua is known for producing them.1
- Strong against the bacteria and fungi that trouble skin. In a laboratory study comparing tea tree, kānuka, cajuput, niaouli and Mānuka oils, Mānuka oil had the strongest effect against Gram-positive bacteria (the group that includes common skin bacteria) and skin fungi, thanks to its triketones.2
- Antioxidant and supports skin renewal. A 2026 laboratory study on human skin cells found Mānuka oil raised antioxidant levels and helped skin cells close a "wound" gap faster, without damaging the cells' DNA.3
- Gentle at our 2% blend. In a New Zealand trial, 118 adults used a 2% Mānuka oil cream twice a day for six weeks with no serious side effects. That's the same strength as Hinu Mirimiri.4
Coconut oil: deep, lasting moisture
- Clinically proven to hydrate dry skin. In a double-blind trial, coconut oil significantly improved skin hydration and surface lipids in people with dry, rough skin, with no adverse reactions.5
- Strengthens the skin barrier. In a trial of 117 children with dry, sensitive skin, coconut oil cut water loss through the skin by around 73% over eight weeks, outperforming mineral oil.6
- Calms and protects. Laboratory research shows coconut oil reduces inflammatory signals and increases the proteins that keep the skin barrier strong.7
- We use the fractionated form, the lightest part of the coconut, rich in medium-chain triglycerides. It absorbs fast, won't go rancid, and gives smooth glide for mirimiri without a greasy feel.
Natural vitamin E: antioxidant protection
- A natural antioxidant that helps protect skin and keeps the oil fresh.
Mirimiri: the ritual that restores
- Slow, upward face massage releases tension held in the jaw, brow and neck, leaving you relaxed, with skin that looks rested and glowing.
