The Healing Power of Mānuka Honey for Gastroenteritis

Introduction

Gastroenteritis, commonly known as "stomach flu," is a widespread illness affecting millions of people worldwide each year. Symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and general discomfort can be debilitating. While rest and proper hydration are essential for recovery, natural remedies like Mānuka honey can assist in alleviating symptoms and promoting healing.

What Makes Mānuka Honey Special?

Mānuka honey is produced from the nectar of the Mānuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium), indigenous to New Zealand. What sets it apart is its remarkable antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, stemming from high concentrations of methylglyoxal (MGO) — a compound found in significantly higher levels than in regular honey.

The Benefits of Mānuka Honey for Gastroenteritis

1. Antibacterial Properties

Gastroenteritis often results from bacterial infections. Mānuka honey's potent antibacterial properties can help combat the harmful bacteria responsible, potentially reducing the duration and severity of symptoms.

2. Anti-Inflammatory Effects

The anti-inflammatory properties of Mānuka honey can help soothe the inflamed lining of the stomach and intestines, offering relief from abdominal pain and discomfort.

3. Immune System Support

Mānuka honey contains antioxidants and compounds that bolster the immune system, aiding your body in fighting the infection. A robust immune response can lead to a shorter duration of illness.

4. Promotes Healing

Renowned for its ability to facilitate tissue repair, Mānuka honey can assist in mending any damage to the intestinal lining caused by inflammation or infection.

How to Use Mānuka Honey for Gastroenteritis

Dosage and Timing

Take one teaspoon of Mānuka honey three times daily — ideally before meals. It can be consumed directly or mixed into warm water or herbal tea (avoid boiling water, as heat can degrade its beneficial properties).

Stay Hydrated

Stay adequately hydrated throughout your illness by drinking clear fluids and electrolyte-rich beverages. Adding Mānuka honey to warm water or herbal teas enhances its soothing effect.

Rest and Diet

While Mānuka honey can alleviate symptoms, rest and a bland diet are equally important. Avoid spicy, fatty, or dairy-heavy foods during recovery.

I have the gastroenteritis at the moment from eating farmed Abalone in China at a restaurant in Qingdao airport I’ll have you know. There is only one there that sells Abalone.
I’m using Greek honey Yogurt and 7+ UMF Manuka Honey I’ve had the Gastro for 72 hours.
I had it almost under control in 48 hours but made the mistake of eating ice cream last night and it has come back again this morning.
I’m eating the honey straight from the container. Had 3 desert spoonfuls this morning and its almost stopped the Gastro.
If this is a little too much detail for some people I apologize.

    Regards, David
